David Ash began his career at Fisher Body during WWII in the template shop. Around 1948, he hired in at Ford Motor Company working in various design departments including the Continental Division, Lincoln studio, Advanced studio as the Executive Stylist – Fashion Trends and Special Assignment, the Ford studio, Corporate Projects studio, and Chief Stylist of the new Special Design Studio. The last 10 years of his career he worked as Head of Interior Design and retired about 1978. In his oral history, Ash focuses on his career as an interior designer at Ford which began in 1948. In 1955, he moved to the Lincoln studio under John Najaar working on the Continental III, IV, and V. He started work in the Advance studio under Bob McQuire in 1958 as Executive Stylist – Fashion Trends and Special Assignment working with Virginia VanBrunt on fabrics and colors and Helen Vincent as a fabric designer. He also worked on designing concept and show cars including the La Galaxie, Constellation, and Super Marauder. After a brief stint in Germany as Senior Designer for the new Tanus interior in 1959/1960, he returned to the U.S. to work on the Kennedy presidential limousine. Later in 1960, he returned to the Ford studio working under Joe Oros as part of the team designing the Mustang. He goes on to discuss his work in the Corporate Projects studio working on the GT40. In 1964, he was promoted to Chief Stylist of the new Special Development Studio working on Ford, Cougar, Thunderbird, Mustang and Lincoln (particularly the Lincoln Mark III). He also touches on his work as Head of Interior Design working on cars, trucks and tractors including working with designers Bill Blass, Cartier, Pucci, and Givenchy on special Mk IV interiors.
